In March 2019, Microsoft announced that Windows 7 support will officially end on January 14, 2020. If you’re one of the millions of people who still use Windows 7, you’ll still be able to use the operating system, but it will leave you vulnerable to viruses.

What Happens if I Keep Using Windows 7?

windows-7-supportThe “end of support” announcement means that technical support and software and security updates will no longer be available for Windows 7. This includes support for any 3rd party applications or programs you might use since the vendors will no longer be able to get support for the underlying operating system.

If your computer runs on Windows 7, it will continue to work after January 14, 2020, but it will be at a much higher risk for viruses and malware. We recommend that you upgrade to Windows 10 before Windows 7 support officially ends.

What Will No Longer Be Supported?

Microsoft will end support for the following products on January 14, 2020:

  • Windows 7
  • Windows Server 2008
  • Windows Server 2008 R2
  • Windows Small Business Server 2011

If you are unsure if you or your company use any of these, you should contact your IT department or IT consultant.

How to Upgrade To Windows 10

Windows 10 is the most up-to-date, secure operating system Microsoft offers. While many computers can be upgraded to Windows 10, Microsoft no longer offers free upgrades. Strategic Systems’ Solutions experts can help you evaluate whether upgrading or replacing your computers is a better value.

Since Windows 10 is a more modern operating system, you should make sure your computer meets the following criteria:

  • Processor: 1 gigahertz (GHz) or faster
  • RAM: 1 gigabyte (GB) for 32-bit or 2 GB for 64-bit
  • Hard disk space: 16 GB for 32-bit OS 20 GB for 64-bit OS
  • Graphics card: DirectX 9 or later with WDDM 1.0 driver
  • Display: 800 x 600 resolution

If your computer doesn’t meet these specifications, it will not be able to run Windows 10. If you’re unsure, contact your IT consultant for clarification. The good news is that new PCs come with Windows 10 already installed so when you buy a new computer, you don’t have to do anything else.
