As of April 21, 2020, the subscription-based suite of Microsoft programs, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint will no longer go under the name of Office 365, instead choosing to rebrand as Microsoft 365, and their individual subscription plans’ names will be updated, too. So, what does this mean for you if you currently have an Office 365 subscription or you had a plan picked out? Not too much, fortunately! Only the name of the products have changed, but the features stay the same. Why the Name Change?

While Office once dominated the world of business software, times have changed. In the past few years, Microsoft has faced The past few years have seen Microsoft facing increasing competition from a variety of sources, but specifically Google with their free suite of tools, including Docs, Sheets, and Slides and their business and enterprise email solutions. As they want to branch out beyond solely Office-based apps and include more collaborative apps and features that today’s businesses are is looking for, they want their name to reflect that while still being recognizable. Hence, Office 365 becomes Microsoft 365.

Microsoft 365 Product Updates

We want to reiterate that none of the features of each package have changed so if you had an Office 365 subscription on April 20th, the Microsoft 365 subscription you have on April 21st has the same tools, services, and apps.

Office 365 Business Essentials is Now Microsoft 365 Business Basic

This is the basic plan that doesn’t include the traditional Office apps, but does provide you with several services, including:

  • Email
  • OneDrive
  • SharePoint
  • Teams
  • Web and mobile versions of Word, Excel, and PowerPoint

Office 365 Business Premium is now Microsoft 365 Business Standard

Get the services included in Business Basic, plus you’ll have several Office Apps available, including:

  • Outlook
  • Word
  • Excel
  • PowerPoint
  • Publisher
  • Access

Microsoft 365 Business is now Microsoft 365 Business Premium

For businesses wanting cloud-based security and whose employees frequently rely on mobile devices and mobile apps, Business Premium is a great option. You’ll have everything that comes with Business Basic and Business Standard, plus:

Office 365 Business is now Microsoft 365 Apps (for Business)

You’ll receive the popular Office Apps:

  • Outlook
  • Word
  • Excel
  • PowerPoint
  • Publisher
  • Access

Plus, users will receive access to OneDrive, the free file saving and storing service.

Office 365 ProPlus is now Microsoft 365 Apps (for Enterprise)

With three tiers of service, enterprise-level businesses can choose their own plan.

  • Microsoft 365 E5 includes Office Apps (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Publisher, and Access), plus Microsoft Teams and email.
  • Microsoft 365 E3 includes Office Apps and email
  • Microsoft 365 F3 is for email only.
